Idli story

We have seen the water in the kettle boil. George Stephenson saw this and went on to invent the steam engine which changed everything. An Indian saw the same thing and invented the 'idli,' presumably the greater invention. :)

Orissa model

null I was planning to collect data before making assessment for a few weeks. That work is done by tv9 and jayaprakash narayan. Watch it to get better idea in impartial way. As usual, orissa is a model state. Others need to act before india becomes another srilanka. https://www.facebook.com/JPLOKSATTA/videos/583461383083384

State elections

Happy and surprised to see the state election results in India. Happy to see that aap won in second state and becoming major contende and it is proved again a party can win without relying on note giving. Surprised to see that bjp could win in such a huge manner again after the pandemic and bad press about idealogies. People are becoming predictable. Hope and governance beat opponents.

India at cross roads of international diplomacy

India is at crossroads of whether to stick with old friend who himself may not see us as friend or find new friends with similar idealogies on capitalism and democracy. No one is perfect but economy trumps all idealogies. No one is friend or enmery forever in international relations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NU_ezeTk_0

Apathy from telugu movie industry

Academy of motion picture arts and sciences is mainly known for oscar awards but they do more than that. They also archive all nominated movies and even some unnominated movies. They digitize them all, and periodically review them to verify quality and update them to fit with new technologies. The world moved from tapes, avds, mpegs, hd to avc. I came to know about this when I worked in youtube. A represenative visited us and gave a talk about their tools and processes and sought feedback. See https://www.oscars.org/film-archive It would not cost much because of current technology compared to earlier days. I wonder why our nandi awards committees would not do the same of preserving old movies. I wonder why filmotagraphy ministry or movie arts assocations would not preserve old tollywood movies. I wonder why bhasha sanghams or telugu universities would not digitize every telugu book ever written. I have fond memories of reading many novels in my childhood though I could not understand fully. I can not find them now. One particular novel I remember is "aakasa deepalu" about a girl named pavani who was blinded by her cousin accidentally. The context is that I am watching popular "Andame Anandam" song. I realized that many people on the internet are looking for movie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bratuku_Teruvu as well. The best service to a language or culture is to preserve the history. If there was no C.P. Brown, we would not have known much about works of vemana or tenali ramakrishna. If there is any effort to digitize telugu books or movies, let me know.

PSU companies

Public Sector Undertaking(PSU) companies where the central or state governments have more control than other private entities. They are classified as three kinds.

  • CPSE(Central Public Sector Enterprises)
  • PSB(Public Sector Banks)
  • SLPE(State level public enterprise)
There are around 280 central public sector companies in India. Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises control around 50 or majority of public sector enterprises. (CCI) Cement Corporation Of India) or BHEL(Bharat Heavy Electoricals Limited) are some examples. Other ministries own the rest of them. Air India Limited is administered by civil aviation ministry. Coal India Limited is administered by coal ministry. Steel Authority of India Limited is controlled by steel ministry. Many PSEs are listed on stock exchange like other private companies are.

They are divided into several kinds based on their performance. Maharatnas, navratnas and miniratnas.  Navratnas are companies that have competitive advantage and potential to become global players. Nav in Navratnas means not nine but new. They can invest up to 1000 crores without taking government permission. Miniratnas are also profit making companies or have potential to profit making but are not ready to perform at global level. Miniratnas are again divided into two subcategories. The high rank ones make 30 crores profit at least in one of the three past years and can make investment up to 500 crores without taking government permission. The miniratnas second category can make up to 300 crores investment without taking government permission.

Maharatnas are large Navratnas that have real power to excel in domestic and global market and government can give more autonomy for them to expand. They have annual profit of 2500 crores. They have around 25000 crores turnover and net worth of 10,000 crores. They can make investment up to 5000 crores without taking government permission. Currently seven companies, BHEL, SAIL, Coal India Ltd, GAIL(Gas authority of India Limited), IOCL(India Oil Corporation Limited), ONGC(Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited) and NTPC (National Thermal Power Plant) qualify for this category. Their performance will be reviewed annually by inter ministry committee to make decision on whether to continue the status.
