We see people looking for and attacking the weakest statement from the opposition whether it is office or politics. That appears like a temporary win and gets applause from already existing supporters. You never gain more than you already have. However when you counter the strongest point and optionally even helping your opponent to phrase it properly and asking clarification questions before attacking is the real victory. It gets you some supporters of the opposite camp as their assumptions are shaken. Cheap shot vs. leadership.
